April/May News

Selina Rosen has been very busy with many projects.  In addition to the writing and editing—daily addiction and task respectively—she is building a barn, putting up new fence, birthing goat kids, planting and tending garden, and too many other things to mention.  Be sure to check out the electronic copies of all five of her former Meisha Merlin titles.  That’s right, Baen Books has published them as Ebooks.  Baen will also be releasing Chains of Redemption—the third CHAINS book in the trilogy—as an Ebook this spring/summer.  AND Yard Dog Press will be releasing a limited trade paperback run for those collectors who like to have the full set.  While you’re looking at Selina’s books, check out Selina’s new novel, Sword Masters.   The trailer is awesome; the book is better.

Laura J. Underwood just finished editing Angels of Mercy, a novel where a small town librarian must battle censorship, goblins, dark elves and the Erl-King in the backwoods of East Tennessee.  The novel will be forthcoming from Five Star Press in 2009.  She is also working on finishing up several pieces of short fiction to meet deadlines and rewriting chapters of her collaboration with Selina Rosen titled Bad City.  (Yes, it is a sequel to their wonderfully funny Bad Lands.)  And she is currently working on podcasting chapters of several of her books.

Glenn Sixbury will be at ConQuesT in Kansas City May 23 - 25.

Melanie Fletcher and Jerry Davis have just kicked off a new podcast, "Don't Quit Your Day Job: The Podcast," where they talk about day jobs, night jobs, writing, reading, SF, fantasy, sex, anime, movies, TV, beer, coffee, Diet Coke with Lime and anything else that passes through their tiny minds.  The podcast's website is at http://dqydjpodcast.com, and is also available from iTunes.  Listeners are highly encouraged to send emails to dqydjpodcast@gmail.com or leave voice messages at 1-206-666-4187 -- and yes, they'll be read on the show!

Beverly Hale says, “I will be assisting at the Nebula Banquet in Austin the end of April.  I’m Guest Liaison for Michael Moorcok and his wife, and I’ll be participating in the mass signing at the event.  In May I’ll be a guest at ConDuit in SLC, UT.   In addition, I’ve set up blogs on LiveJournal, MySpace and FaceBook and I’m also signed up on Goodreeds.  Everyone should be able to find me under bevhale on each site.  Still finishing up a pair of books.”

Katharine Eliska Kimbriel will be attending the Nebula Weekend in Austin, TX April 25, 26 & 27, 2008.

David Niall Wilson recently won the Bram Stoker Award for short fiction from the HWA, and is following up his award nominated collection, “Defining Moments,” with a new collection from Dark Arts Books titled “Ennui & Other States of Madness.” His novel MAELSTROM will be out from Full Moon Press later in the summer, and in the fall he has a new Bad Moon Books novella, a second novel from Full Moon Press, “Sins of the Flash,” closely followed by a dual release Five Star and Bad Moon books of his novel “Vintage Soul.” Ordering info and more details are always available at his journal.. http://www.macabreink.com

Julia Mandala will be attending SoonerCon, June 6-8.

James K. Burk says, “I’m wrapping up a new novel, a fantasy, which I hope to have finished by ConQuesT.  I anticipate being at ConQuesT.”

Gloria Oliver’s YA Fantasy “Cross-eyed Dragon Troubles” is now available in trade paperback.   Think Harry Potter meets the Dragon Riders of Pern.  Available for purchase at Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/Cross-Eyed-Dragon-Troubles-Gloria-Oliver/dp/0759944660/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1207437632&sr=1-1   Sample Chapter and other info available at www.gloriaoliver.com/crossed.html

Lee Killough: After hunkering down waiting for winter to please please go away, she and Denny are looking forward to Condome in Kibler this month. In May Lee and Denny will be doing the two-cons-in-one-weekend madness again, attending the mystery con Mayhem in the Midlands on May 22-23 then rushing down to KC Friday evening to finish the weekend with ConQuesT.

M.H. Bonham has been very, very busy.  Her current book, Lachlei, is available through Dragon Moon Press.  It is the prequel of Runestone of Teiwas and Prophecy of Swords.  She is running a contest where you can die in her book being killed by a werewolf.  You can also win a lot of great prizes.  Go to www.lachlei.com for more information.  She has another fantasy coming out with a WolfSinger publications, which is a prequel to Prophecy of Swords and a Romarin and Kalena story.  It is called The King’s Champion.   Lastly, she just had a group Of Shadowhelm short stories accepted by Yard Dog Press.  The stories, Serpent Singer and other stories, should be available sometime very soon.  One of her short stories was part of a collection that was an Eppie finalist.  The story is called, When the Vengeance Is Gone..., and you can read it in Wolfsinger’s book, A Time to....  M. H. Bonham will also be attending the following cons: Miscon (Missoula, Montana), Soonercon, Conestoga, Worldcon, Dragon*con, Fencon, MileHiCon, and maybe World Fantasy.

Ken Rand has seen the release of Fairy BrewHaHa at the Lucky Nickel Saloon from Yard Dog Press last month followed by release of Where Angels Fear from Fairwood Press this month. Next month, Five star will release Pax Dakota. There Will Be More. Healthwise, not so hot, but faking it well.

The paperback of Jody Lynn Nye’s fantasy epic, An Unexpected Apprentice, just came out from TOR Books. The title for the second volume is still TBD; but the current cover sketch, by the same artist, is magnificent. Jody will be co-guest of honor with Bob Asprin at MarCon at the end of May in Columbus, OH. Their latest book, Myth Chief, just came out in trade paper from Wildside Press, cover by Phil Foglio. Last month, Myth-Gotten Gains, also by Bob and Jody came out in mass market paperback from Ace Books.

A new story by James Dorr, “All One Wants for Christmas,” has just been published in the electronic flash fiction journal POSTCARDS FROM..., while reprints “Invisible People” and “Sunrise Revival” have come out in SPECFICME’S FEATURED FICTION and DEMON MINDS respectively.  Dorr has also published three new poems, “What’s A Zombie to Do?” in Spec House of Poetry’s print anthology SFPA POETRY CONTEST - 2007: SONNETS and, electronically, “The Fox” in RAVEN ELECTRICK          and “The Assignation” in MOUTH FULL OF BULLETS.

Allison Stein’s short story, “Curious George Visits The Solar J Astroport Diner” from the “Houston, We’ve Got Bubbas” anthology took first place in the short fiction category of the Missouri Professional Communicator’s annual communications contest. Allison’s convention schedule: May - ConQuesT, Kansas City; June - SoonerCon, Oklahoma City; July - Conestoga, Tulsa; August - (tentative) Denvention, the Denver Worldcon; October - Archon, St. Louis. Meanwhile, original art and prints are available in her Etsy shop, http://allisonstein.etsy.com

Mel Tatum took a short break from the convention circuit to concentrate on music - particularly hosting series of house concerts featuring musicians from Ireland and Scotland. Of course, those experiences will likely show up in a story somewhere at some point!  She will be attending the Nebula awards in April, and the rest of her convention schedule is still being finalized, as she will be teaching in Dublin, Ireland for the month of June and will be moving to Tucson, Arizona late this Fall.

Claudia Christian is busy being President of Wald Entertainment and Creative Director of Opus (krakenopus.com) and she is missing her flagrantly decadent previous life as an actress-writer..!

Kathy Turski sold her humor essay, “My Inner Fat Girl”, to the Canadian magazine, Abilities. It’s coming out in their Spring issue. Kathy’s thrilled at becoming a professional humor writer, and her Inner Fat Girl wants cheesecake.

Christopher Donahue has good news, “I’ve sold a short story to the Permuted
Press anthology ROBOTS BEYOND. I think you had the word of an earlier sale to the Lulu Press anthology SPECULATIVE REALMS, but here it is if you hadn’t gotten it before. The ROBOTS BEYOND story is The Cure (guy is turned into a zombie by an experimental nanobot treatment for cancer). The SPECULATIVE REALMS story is Children of Ba-Seku (Hyksos-period Egyptian story with—you guessed it—zombies. It was written for HISTORY IS DEAD, but the editor didn’t receive it. I’m glad it found a home.)”

Susan Satterfield will be attending DemiCon 19 in Des Moines, Iowa May 2-4, 2008, where she will be reading from her newest story, “The Rage.”   Susan will also be attending ConQuesT 39, May 23-25, where she will be organizing the Fourth Annual Story-In-A-Bag Writing Contest, the Sixth Annual Writer’s Workshop, and the return of ConQuesT Idol.

James K. (Jim) Burk says, "I will be at ConQuesT this year, as well as Soonercon and Conestoga."

Paul Carlson says, "I have a short humorous reprint, 'Waveform,' anthologized in 'SF Waxes Philosophical,' just released by the new ZC Press.
Also a novella, "Shotgun Seat," in the new (July/August 08) issue of Analog magazine. Much like me, it features a truck driver."

Unless someone contacts me to add something, that’s it for April and May.

Thanks,

Lynn

February/March News

Selina Rosen: Sword Masters (from Dragon Moon Press) is here, and it’s wonderful! It has already garnered good reviews.  It’s available directly from Selina at www.selinarosen.com or from Amazon.com.

Selina has already attended ShadowCon in Memphis and ConDFW in Texas this year. She is scheduled to be a guest at Tulsa Comic Con the weekend of March 15th & 16th and Midsouthcon in Memphis the weekend of March 28th-30th.

Maggie Bonham: My book, Lachlei, [was released] in March though Dragon Moon Press.  It’s a prequel to Prophecy of Swords and Runestone of Teiwas. It’s on sale, 30% off right now at www.edgewebsite.com or Amazon.com. I should be at Norwescon.  Don’t forget that I’m the editor for the upcoming anthology, WolfSong  from WolfSinger Pubs.  First, my short novel, The King’s Champion was picked up by a micro press, WolfSinger Pubs. It’ll be out and ready for Worldcon. Second, my short Space Pirate Story, Captain Bardi Ddu , was picked up for an anthology edited by David Lee Summers, Tales of the Talisman fame. Sorcerous Signals The February Issue is now live and online.

Laura J. Underwood:    THE GREEN WOMEN is now available from Sam's Dot
Publishing, "Renalto" has come out on Sorceress Signals and "Drooling Wizards" is available at Helix: A Speculative Fiction Quarterly. And I am currently working on editing ANGELS OF MERCY for Five Star Press (due out in 2009). I will be at MidSouthCon.

Peter Bradley: Here's a link for the convention I'll be at on the weekend of March 28th http://www.trolllord.com/newsite/events/trollcon6.html. It’s a local one in Muskogee, Oklahoma for anyone interested in attending. The owners of Troll Lord Games will be there. As well as Jolly Blackburn of Kenzer Co and the Knights of the Dinner Table fame. Aldo of Alliance Distributing is expected to attend as well.

Robert Brown will be at Midsouthcon.

Gloria Oliver: Finally got a review for Willing Sacrifice. Reviewers seem to be
swamped of late so it's been hard to get some. http://www.myshelf.com/scifi_fantasy/08/willingsacrifice.htm

Tracy Morris/Godsey: …was given an Honorable Mention in the first quarter 2008 L Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future competition for her short story Blame it On the Dragon.  The story is set in the same universe as Morris' chapbook Medieval Misfits, which is available from Yard Dog Press (coincidentally enough).

I've gotten a job writing articles for Foxfire news.  Right now it's reviews of the TV show Moonlight (I've seen one episode, and while I'm not fanatical about it, it's okay.), and articles on the paranormal. Here's the first review.
http://firefox.org/news/articles/1144/1/Writer039s-strike-got-you-down--Moonlight-is-worth-a--look/Page1.html

My review of Moonlight episode 1.02 is up now.  It's a little scathing and a lot snarky, so I'm expecting some negative feedback.

http://firefox.org/news/articles/1151/1/Review-Moonlight-quotOut-of-the-Pastquot/Page1.html
In other news, I've also contracted to write 2 paranormal/cryptozoology/unexplained/mystery-type stories a month for firefox News.  That's 11 this year.  My first paranormal article is up on firefox.org.  It's about the Heavener runestone.  Vikings! In Oklahoma?

I've got another article up on Firefox.  This one is a ghost story that I remember from when I worked in Ohio. It involves a dead doctor, a shifty coroner, missing organs and a murder investigation.  There's a lot of dark humor in it.  Which is probably why I remember it so well. http://firefox.org/news/articles/1240/1/The-strange-story-of-Dr-Lowry-a-ghost-whose-actions-came-back-to-haunt-him/Page1.html

My latest paranormal article for Firefox.org is up. This one should tickle you guys up in KC, it's about Stull Cemetery. Stull Cemetery: The Devil's Graveyard? Er . . . Maybe Not. http://firefox.org/news/articles/1272/1/Stull-Cemetery-The-Devil039s-graveyard--Er----Maybe-Not/Page1.html

Allison Stein: I entered my "Curious George..." story from the Houston book in the Missouri Professional Communicators' annual contest, and it won first place in the short story category. Now it will be sent to the national level, and I'll find out about that one in September.

Rhonda Eudaly/Simpson: First off: there's a whole new look (which will be changing over the next few weeks) to my website: http://www.rhondaeudaly.com - it will be updated more frequently and is much easier for me to deal with. Right now, it's in a default mode as I get used to it, and as a web designer friend of mine clears up some time. The website does allow for comments, so have fun with that.

I'm currently running a contest on it for a tagline -- summary of what I am/do. If you come up with the best/most creative, I'm giving away one of the anthologies I'm in that you may not have yet. Or if you have everything I've been in, you can either appear in an upcoming piece or receive one of the new publications when they come out later in the year.

Second: I have had four stories accepted to Anthology Builder. Anthology Builder is a great project where you can pick your stories and your art and have a custom built anthology. Just do a search for either the following titles, or my name. Sarcrifices from APEX DIGEST Issue #5 - which is now sold out. Dream Takers from the 2006 Bram Stoker Finalist Anthology Aegri Somnia Closing Windows from Jeff Turner’s Fundamentally Challenged with a Frank Wu cover. Why Don’t You Get A Real Job? from the RAGE Machine anthology Ghostbreakers: Sinister Sleuths

Newcomer’s key to understanding the acronyms and shortened titles:
